M y   A m e r i c a n   M i n d

My American mind laughs at the bags under my eyes

You can’t have too much of a good thing

Walmart prices get dirt cheap and florescent lights put us to sleep

My American mind

My American mind loves our flag

Loves stars and stripes and denim and flannel plaid

Hummers, rabbit hunting and 4 dollar a gallon gas

My American mind loves the flag

My American mind loves to starve

Loves treadmills, Jenny Craig and protein bars

Bread scares the living shit out of me and my Trident’s always sugar-free

My American mind loves to starve

But my American mind loves the peanut

And that lovely old fashioned butter that takes me out of all my Sunday ruts

A spoon will do until the jar is through, a creamy crunchy friend until the end

My American mind loves the peanut

My American mind also likes to fly

And when I landed in Europe I often wondered why

The cars were so ridiculously small and the coffee cups were all made for dolls

People smell their food before they eat and have family reunions once a week

My American mind likes to fly

But my American mind knows how to dream

And though at times these goals and timelines may seem a bit extreme

This black or white and hot or cold is what helped me meet a long list of goals

And stories true that I had told

My American mind
