This journey began in Chile.
I was twenty years old and studying Spanish language and Chilean culture in Valparaiso. I took a trip to the Maipo valley and visited my first vineyard, Concha y Toro's Casillero del Diablo. I learned about the long lost grape of Chilean pride and fame, Carmenere; about it's history of travel from Europe long before the outbreak of phylloxera, it's disappearance and it's recent rediscovery. I was just starting to get a grip on Spanish and listening to my tour guide gush about the incomparable growing conditions in the varied Chilean climates and valleys made me thirsty for more...
Wine! is culture and each bottle has a story; a perfect combination of geography, language, tradition, cuisine, art and merriment.
Since my stay in Chile, I have become a conscious consumer of a variety of wines from all around the world. I've visited vineyards in Chile, Argentina, the USA, France, Italy, Spain, and India! When I was 23 I moved to Spain so that I could afford to make this a hobby of mine. (In this blog you will find a few highlights from these travels.) After a return to the states and a bit of a hiatus from the world of wine due to bad location, lack of funds and lack of time, I am back in Europe and ready to roll.
I will be living in Porto, Portugal for the next few months exploring, tasting, smelling, watching, listening, and taking notes, but you can find me here.
Saúde! ¡Salud! Santé! Cheers ;)
